Trust’s ‘We are Bradford’ campaign in running for prestigious national award

WE ARE delighted to have been nominated for a prestigious 2019 Health Service Journal (HSJ) award for our ‘We are Bradford’ staff engagement campaign.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s (BTHFT) entry has been shortlisted in the Staff Engagement category, recognising the step-change we have delivered in making sure ALL our staff feel listened to, involved and engaged.

The black-tie awards take place tonight at Evolution in Battersea, London. Through a rigorous and transparent judging process they aim to produce a roll call of the best organisations, teams and people in the NHS and wider health sector.

Lily Hurford, Head of Organisational Development at BTHFT, said: “Our journey began in 2016 with a vision for our staff to feel valued, motivated and well led and to be in the top 20 per cent of NHS employers.

“To help give the very best care we can, we asked everyone to tell us what’s special about our organisation, and started to put our unique culture at the heart of building an even better place for our staff and patients.

Mission and vision

“Together, we refreshed our Trust mission and vision and developed strategies setting out commitments to our patients and our staff. We introduced accessible leadership development opportunities and appraisals based on effective conversations.

“In 2017, we explored our values, asking staff what was important to them and what kind of organisation they wanted to work in. The essence of Bradford was quite simple really: We care. We value people. We are one team.

“Last year, we set about bringing those values to life through recruitment, induction, appraisals and staff awards. ‘Work as One’ week – working as one big team to benefit our patients, was our most ambitious and successful initiative, with five events throughout 2018/19 and more planned.”

The results throughout the Trust speak for themselves. We now have a really strong brand for staff engagement – We are Bradford. It encapsulates a set of values and behaviours, and the way we behave with each other and our patients.

We have seen the benefit of using this consistently, for example in our recruitment materials, and it shows through in our continually improving staff survey scores.

We also have a family of internal communications which have evolved from our very successful Let’s Talk weekly magazine, produced by our Communications team, including Let’s Talk Together (a regular senior leaders’ meeting), and Let’s Talk Live (small-scale departmental meetings with the Chief Executive and executive colleagues).

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for providing hospital services for the people of Bradford and communities across Yorkshire. We serve a core population of around 500,000 and provide specialist services for 1.1 million people.

Our 5,500 staff work over several sites, including Bradford Royal Infirmary, which provides the majority of inpatient services, and St Luke’s Hospital, which predominantly provides outpatient and rehabilitation services. In 2017, we also completed a £2m refurbishment of our Emergency Department (ED) as part of an ambitious vision to create a more efficient acute medicine service for the people of Bradford. It has been designed to provide a slicker and more efficient service, with faster senior clinical involvement at an early stage in the patient pathway.

As a teaching hospital, we are at the forefront of education and development in healthcare, and have an excellent reputation for research performance. We are one of the leading centres in conducting applied research in the country, particularly in quality and safety, elderly care and rehabilitation.

The Trust is home to the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR) where researchers have led the development, validation and implementation of the award-winning Bradford Electronic Frailty Index (eFI) which helps calculate an elderly person’s risk of disability, impairment, falls and complications of chronic diseases, as well as their diminishing independence and capability. This is now being used by 98 per cent of all GPs across the country.

Our award-winning Ophthalmology department is home to numerous worldwide clinical trials taking the lead in eye care research and we are one of only three sites in the United Kingdom to be enlisted in the Perioperative Enhanced Recovery Hip Fracture Care of Patients with Dementia (PERFECTED) study, which will investigate how the NHS can introduce better standards of care to improve outcomes for people with dementia.
