What we do

The Clinical Prosthetics Centre provides a Facial Prosthetic Rehabilitation service to patients referred from the Plastic Surgery, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), Maxillofacial, and Ophthalmic (eye) departments and from GPs.

The Clinical Prosthetics Centre also provides a clinical laboratory service to support maxillofacial surgery for the treatment of head and neck cancer, facial trauma and facial/jaw re-alignment.

In detail the work of this specialty includes:

  • Plastic surgery
  • Prosthetic reconstruction using adhesive or implant-retained ears, noses, eye/orbits
  • Prosthetic reconstruction of the nipple/areola
  • Prosthetic reconstruction following finger/hand surgery
  • Prosthetic reconstruction of post-surgical leg defects
  • ENT surgery
  • Prosthetic reconstruction using adhesive or implant-retained ears, noses, eye/orbits
  • Tracheo-stoma obturation
  • Ophthalmic surgery
  • Custom-made ocular prostheses
  • Maxillofacial and oral surgery
  • Pre and post-surgical splinting and obturation
  • Implant-retained dental appliances
  • Post-surgical prosthetic rehabilitation
  • Oro/dental appliances and splints
  • Facial trauma support appliances and splints
  • Pre-surgical osteotomy planning support and splints

Teaching, training and research

The department is committed to a high standard of postgraduate teaching and continuing professional education in maxillofacial and clinical prosthetics, and staff are involved in individual research and development projects.

Quality assurance - clinical audit and clinical governance

All clinical prosthetics staff actively take part in clinical audits locally. Clinical governance meetings are held bi-monthly in the department. Emphasis is given to clinical effectiveness and improving patient satisfaction.

Service opening times

The laboratory staff are available from 8.45am to 5.15pm, Monday to Friday.

Prosthetics clinics run from 10am to noon, and 2.30 to 4.30 pm.
