Who we are

The Neurological Rehabilitation Teams provide rehabilitation to those individuals with a neurological condition or acquired brain injury. Patients may have a new diagnosis, long term condition, or a neurological degenerative condition.

Damage to the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, means that the messages from your brain are not reaching the affected parts of your body. This can result in loss of movement and sensation, uncoordinated movement, weak and floppy muscles, spasm and tremor, changes in behaviour and thinking skills.

Neurological conditions we treat include stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinsons, Ataxia, Spinal cord injuries, Guillan Barre Syndrome and Motor Neuron Disease (MND).  Any individual with a neurological diagnosis, or under investigation by a neurologist, who requires specialist neurological rehabilitation can be referred to our team.

The area covered by NRT is those who have a Bradford GP and postcode (BD1-10,12-18, not all BD16 as we do not cover Bingley).

Our team consists of Occupational Therapists (OT), Physiotherapists (PT) and Therapy Assistants (TA). We work across the outpatient and community setting to provide a co-ordinated approach to patient care.

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

These are specialist Physiotherapists who work with patients with a neurological disorder to identify and manage their movement deficits. By setting goals together we will aim to improve specific activities and social participation.

They help promote their patients’ health and wellbeing, and assist the rehabilitation process by developing and restoring body systems to their full potential.

What is Neurological Occupational Therapy (OT)?

Specialist neurological OT’s work with people with neurological disorders to empower them through rehabilitation, education and practical support, including equipment provision, to overcome barriers in doing activities that matter to them. This may include washing and dressing, meal preparation and community activities, social and work. It encompasses specific assessment of mood, memory and thinking skills to discover strengths and any difficulties in order to provide strategies to overcome these problems.

The team aim to maximise an individual’s level of independence in everyday activities in order for them to reach their full potential following illness/injury or to manage a long-term condition.

Input from the team comprises of a patient centred assessment to identify shared goals and formulation of an agreed rehabilitation plan.  This may be in their own home, clinic or community setting. The team will collaborate with other services, where appropriate, for the benefit of patients and their carers.

Input aims to enable people to optimise function, participation, Quality of Life, and independence/function as independently as possible. Self-management is key, the team are unable to provide long term or maintenance therapy, and we work together towards maximising ability to do so.
