The Emergency Department at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI), part of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is holding a public meeting to hear your views on reshaping the patient experience of local urgent and emergency care.
This follows on from various community patient engagement events aimed at improving the service that have been ongoing since the start of the year across the Bradford district.
Matron Lead for the Emergency Department’s ‘Outstanding Programme’, Tania Windle, said: “We’re embarking on an ambitious, three-year journey to improve the way we deliver urgent and emergency care, enhancing the experience for both patients and staff.
“Excel stands for ‘Enhancing Experience reducing waits and shortening length of stay’ for our patients. Our shared vision is simple: to improve patient and staff experiences by reducing demand on emergency care, creating more effective care pathways, enhancing our workplace culture and shortening the time our patients spend in our Emergency Department and in hospital.
“We are holding these public events to further explore our patients’ experiences and ideas for improvement. Patient’s feedback is the key driver in making positive change to improve their experience and the patient voice is so important, we want to hear it.”
The BRI Emergency Department patient and carer event takes place on November 17, from 11am to 3pm, and is part of the ‘Excel’ programme which aims to provide an outstanding service and deliver safe and excellent care for everyone, all day, every day, today and in the future. It’s being run by the trust’s clinical and patient experience teams.
Doctors and nurses will outline the programme’s ambitions, update on its progress so far and take questions from attendees.
Matron Windle added: “It’s vitally important to directly engage with patients to gather feedback on their experiences in the Emergency Department. These events aim to understand patient concerns and suggestions to improve services, with a focus on aspects like waiting times, communication with staff, and comfort in the Emergency Department environment.”

While the Trust’s Public and Patient Engagement Officer, George Reynolds, explained: “We run regular listening events across the district to encourage people to take part in activities to improve services where they get the chance to be heard.
“These events are designed to ensure a public voice is heard by relevant members of our clinical teams, as well as our management team and the Trust Board.
“All patient engagement feedback events result in actions that are monitored and followed through by the relevant teams. They come in a number of forms but always involve staff and members of the public, so your opinions and experiences really do matter and we want to hear them.”
The BRI’s Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the region, seeing around 500 patients attending daily. The department was designed to accommodate 250 patients.
As well as speaking to staff and patients, the teams are also engaging with other stakeholder groups including the ambulance service, police, primary care teams and 111.
A light lunch will be provided but spaces are limited, so to book your place, please email: george.reynolds@bthft.nhs.uk
