The Malignant Haematology Team at Bradford Teaching Hospitals diagnoses, treats, and supports people with blood cancers such as:

  • Lymphoma
  • Myeloma
  • Leukaemia (chronic and acute)

If your GP or another specialist sends you to us, you may need tests such as:

If you already have a diagnosis, we may do extra tests to confirm details before making a treatment plan.

Your results will be discussed at a Multi-Disciplinary Team meeting. This brings together different specialists to decide the best treatment for you.

Possible treatments include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Stem cell transplant
  • CAR T-cell therapy

Some of these treatments are given at Bexley Wing, St James’s Hospital.

If you are diagnosed with blood cancer

If tests confirm you have blood cancer:

  • You will meet with a doctor and a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to discuss your diagnosis and treatment
  • We recommend bringing a family member or friend for support
  • You will get written information about your condition, medicines, side effects, and contact details for the team

Your CNS team will be available throughout your treatment. You can phone them or arrange to meet in person.

Your treatment journey

Depending on your plan:

  • You may stay on Ward 33 for some or all of your treatment
  • Some treatments are given at a day case at The Meadows
  • Some treatments are tablets you take at home

You will have:

  • Blood tests between cycles
  • Reviews by a doctor, nurse, or advanced clinical practitioner (ACP) to check side effects
  • Support with medicines or treatment changes if you have side effects

How do I contact my CNS?

You can contact the CNS team on  01274 277473 (available Monday – Friday, leave a message and we will call you back as soon as possible)

What should I do if I am finding it hard to cope emotionally?

Tell your CNS. They can give support or refer you to specialist services such as psychology or Cancer Support Yorkshire.

Can I get my hospital prescription from my local pharmacy?

No.  Hospital prescriptions can only be dispensed by hospital pharmacies. Outpatient prescriptions are sent electronically to St Luke’s Hospital pharmacy.

Where can I park at clinic?

Parking can be busy. At Eccleshill, parking is free but spaces are limited.

What should I do if I’m struggling financially following my diagnosis?

Tell your CNS. They can refer you to agencies for benefits advice and grants and provide letters of support.

How long will my treatment last?

Treatment is given in cycles. The length depends on your diagnosis.  Some treatments have a set number of cycles, others are ongoing. Your doctor will explain this in more detail when you see them at clinic.

Do I need a special diet during chemotherapy?

We recommend a healthy diet, safe food handling, and avoiding foods that may cause infection. You will receive a dietary advice sheet before starting treatment.
