Welcome to the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT) Ward Block 2 consultation website.

Throughout this website you will find information to provide you with the latest information regarding the proposed future development of the Bradford Royal Infirmary site. In addition we would like to get your views about what our priorities should be in developing state-of-the-art healthcare facilities over the next few years.

Summary

  • temple bank houseResearch Facility

Over the past few years BTHFT has invested heavily in improving the physical infrastructure of our hospitals. Notable developments include:

  • A new ward block (Ward Block 1) and extensive ward upgrades
  • The Listening for Life Centre
  • The Sovereign Lecture Theatre
  • Pain Management Centre
  • Health and Wellbeing Centre
  • Redeveloped Ultrasound and CT suites
  • Gastroenterology and Breast Surgery Units
  • Increased High Dependency Care provision
  • Outpatient facility improvements
  • Temple Bank House (Research and Development facilities)
  • Moving acute medical patients from St Luke's Hospital to BRI

It is now recognised that the clear priority on the BRI site is to refurbish and replace some of the old-style Nightingale wards built in the 1930s. Our new wards will provide many more single rooms and four bedded bays with their own bathroom facilities. We do not expect men and women to share facilities

A Solution

We have plans to build two new wards above the main entrance. This will also allow us to expand the main entrance for patient and visitor facilities such as a shop and restaurant.

In developing the project many different uses of clinical space have been considered, with all departments within the hospital being able to register their interest in moving into new accommodation or having their current facilities refurbished. The final proposal was brought down to the following:

  • Development of a new Medical Assessment Unit with a new Cancer facility and refurbished Paediatric accommodation
  • Or

  • Development of a new Medical Assessment Unit with a new Paediatric unit and refurbished Cancer accommodation within current locations.

On the 27th April, following a recommendation from the Foundation Trust the Board of Directors approved the development of the second option, a new Medical Assessment Unit and Paediatric unit.

This decision remains subject to the Foundation Trust meeting its cost improvement programme obligations over the next year and a final decision regarding construction will not be made until April 2012 at the earliest.

The contribution made by our staff, patients and public in informing this decision was invaluable. A dedicated online survey and consultation sessions were held to gauge opinion about what our priorities for accommodation should be. The results of this are shown in the survey section.
