General Information
Surgical ward
Ward 2 is a 28 bedded surgical paediatric (children's) ward. Children requiring planned day case and overnight short stay are cared for alongside the acute surgical service. Type of surgery includes ears, nose and throat and eye, plastics, dental, some general surgery and orthopaedic, trauma
There is a pre-assessment clinic which is nurse led and enhances the pathway for the children being admitted electively. Nurse led discharges have been implemented for selected procedures with plans to extend this to other procedures. The ward encompasses a daily wound care clinic.
Medical wards
Ward 16 is a busy acute medical ward providing care for children with acute short term and chronic medical conditions. A Paediatric Assessment Area assesses ill children with complex needs.
Ward 16 is a 17 bedded ward providing care for children with short-term and chronic medical conditions.
There is a stabilisation room which serves both wards and is where critically ill children can be assessed and treated prior to returning to the ward or transferring to a paediatric intensive care unit
Ward 17 is a 24 bedded ward providing the same care as on ward 16. It also facilitates a nurse led day case area whereby children attend for investigations and therapies such as blood transfusions.
Practice and Professional Development
This is a small nurse led team who are responsible for assessing training and development needs for nursing staff, they provide a comprehensive in house training programme which encompasses all qualified, unqualified nurses, play leaders and support staff. They also undertake audit and research work as well as facilitating changes in practice and innovative care projects. The team has strong links with the school of Health Studies at Bradford University.
Play Leaders Team
There is a team of play leaders who run the 2 children’s play rooms and visit children on the wards. They provide play material, play with children and help older children with recreational equipment etc. They support qualified nursing staff with distractional therapy during painful procedures.
There are also regular outside visitors that contribute to the delivery of play and distraction, e.g. the Theodora Clown Doctors. The playrooms are always busy, noisy and a lot of fun and by enabling the children to play has been shown to promote and speed up their recovery whilst also reducing, pain anxiety and stress.
Children’s Outpatients Services
Children's outpatients is a friendly, child orientated outpatient centre based at St Luke's hospital and is where children attend who need to see a Paediatrician. Children also attend for investigations and blood tests.
Consultant clinics are provided by Bradford Hospital’s paediatricians and paediatricians from regional services and Centres of Excellence. The metabolic service is a regional service provided by a team of specialists from Manchester. Other specialist clinics provided by visiting Consultants include nephrology, urology, cardiology, genetics and cleft palate. In excess of 1500 children are seen in the department each month.
The department facilitates nurse led clinics for children with specific diagnosis. A nursery nurse based in the play area provides play and activities to both children waiting to be seen in clinic or about to undergo blood tests and other investigations. The nursery nurse also supports the qualified nursing staff and phlebotomists by providing distraction for children undergoing painful procedures.
