Diabetes & Endocrinology
General Information
There is a designated diabetes and endocrinology department based in the Duke of York Wing at Bradford Royal Infirmary. This provides outpatient services to adult patients with diabetes and has clinic accommodation for the multidisciplinary team.
Retinal screening is provided by five community based Opticians. Patients are referred to a central point and then contacted and offered a choice of provider and appointment with their provider of choice. If the Optician Retinal Screener detects a problem they are referred for Retinal Photography to the Ophthalmology service at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
The hospital diabetes team provides specialist services for pregnancy and pre-pregnancy planning, an insulin pump service, renal diabetes support, adolescent patients and those with rare or atypical forms of diabetes and other specials needs.
Three full time diabetes specialist nurses provide an education and advisory service for patients, carers and other health care professionals including inception of insulin therapy.
Podiatry services provide a diabetic foot clinic for patients with complex diabetic foot problems, such as ulcers. The annual foot review service is now provided by the Community Diabetes Services via your GP Practice
There are joint clinics with orthotists and vascular nurses and there are well-established links with the vascular surgical team facilitating rapid referral.
