Cardiology
General Information
Cardiology (heart) provides services at both St Luke’s Hospital (SLH) and Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI). There are six cardiologists (heart specialists) providing the full range of adult cardiological services.
The cardiology service deals with a range of adult heart disease (not children) such as chest pain (angina), hypertension (high blood pressure), irregular heart beats, shortness of breath, chronic heart problems and infections of heart valves.
Out-patient Services
There is a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic at the BRI which accepts referrals for new onset chest pain and sees patients within a maximum of 14 days.
General cardiology outpatients clinics are held at St Luke’s Hospital with clinic sessions available each day of the week. The department is able to deal with the full range of adult heart disease.
GPs are able to directly access a number of investigations directly to enable them to better manage cardiac disease in the community where appropriate.
Inpatient Services
Inpatient services are based on the BRI site in a purpose designed cardiology ward and coronary care unit.
The foundation trust is able to provide the full range of cardiological treatments, other than heart surgery which is carried out at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. We perform:-
Implantation of pacemakers
-
Coronary angiography (radiological investigation of the coronary arteries)
-
Coronary angioplasty (balloon dilatation – expansion - of the coronaries)
-
Implantation of specialised devices such as implantable defibrillators
Diagnostic Services
The full range of cardiological diagnostic services are available in and waiting times are generally short - with most investigations carried out within four weeks, from being referred by your GP.
Other Cardiology Services
There is an excellent cardiology rehabilitation service for patients who have suffered a heart attack and for some patients with heart failure.
The department are developing a service for refractory angina (angina that is not able to be treated or helped with medical or surgical treatments) and a treatment known as Enhanced External Counterpulsation is available for patients with refractory angina
