Doctor checking medicines

Directorate Information

The pharmacy directorate is committed to ensuring that patient safety is a priority and we continually develop, review and implement new safety initiatives in all areas of our work.

The foundation trust was recently named as the safest hospital trust outside London by the Dr Foster hospital guide - overall the third safest in England.  We are trying to improve this even further by taking place in the charity Health Foundation's Safer Patients Initiative.  This aims to reduce the number of adverse incidents taking place.  Medicines management risk is one of the main project areas within the initiative.

Our primary responsibilities are the purchasing, preparation, dispensing and safe use of medicines. We work closely on therapeutic issues with specialist teams such as paediatrics, oncology and psychiatry to improve the quality of patient care.

The Trust has recently been selected as one of ten hospitals to participate in the National Safer Patients Initiative with medicines management risk reduction being one of the main project areas within the initiative.

The Directorate has 95 staff who work as part of specialist pharmacy teams; these includes the following staff groups:

  • Administration and clerical staff
  • Diploma pharmacists
  • Hospital managers
  • Information and technology staff
  • Pharmacists
  • Pharmacy assistants
