Service Summary

The Medical Illustration Department is based at St Luke’s Hospital and provides a comprehensive clinical photography and illustrative service to Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Professional Medical Illustrators work as part of the healthcare team either as clinical photographer or graphic designers.

Medical Illustration’s clients within the Trust are consultant and senior medical staff, senior managers and healthcare professionals. Additionally, Medical Illustration provides an income-generating service for Primary Care Trusts, private healthcare agencies and solicitors.

All of the department’s technical staff are registered Medical Illustration Practitioners and the department was the first such service in the UK to become ISO9001: 2000 accredited.

Medical Illustration has two sub-specialties, which are ‘Photography’ and ‘Graphics’.

Photography and Video

Clinical Photographers take photographs and video recordings of patients’ conditions for diagnosis, hospital records, treatment planning, teaching and research. Diagnostic ophthalmic imaging is undertaken in a satellite unit based at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The department also undertakes general photography including scientific and technical photography, PR photography and reprographics.

Graphics

Graphic Designers develop patient information (in a variety of media) and undertake corporate design and print and the preparation of graphics for teaching and research.
