Our Approach to Treating Patients

The orthopaedic department at Bradford Royal Infirmary offers a service for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal problems. Some of our surgeons have national reputations and we aim to combine cutting-edge techniques with evidence based traditional methods to provide patients with the best orthopaedic care possible.
All our surgeons are sub-specialists, performing high numbers of procedures in their chosen field. We believe that this approach produces the best outcomes with the lowest complication rates.
We believe that all patients are individuals with unique circumstances, that we should listen to their needs, and that the best clinical outcomes are achieved through partnership between the specialist and the patient, where the patient is provided with the knowledge to make an informed decision about their own treatment.

We aim to present a realistic outlook, including the limitations and risks as well as the potential benefits. Surgery is just one treatment option - many musculoskeletal conditions can be treated by non-surgical techniques. In these cases care will be provided by liaison with the primary care team.

Questions are always welcome and are encouraged at every stage.

The Department

Bradford’s purpose built elective (planned) orthopaedic unit, is made up of two dedicated wards. Facilities offered on both wards are:

  • Four bedded single sex bays
  • Single rooms with ensuite facilities
  • Patient / nurse controlled electric profiling beds
  • Personal TV and telephone access (pay as you go)
  • State-of-the-art medical and surgical equipment

The unit’s innovative approach to service provision at ward level is led by our own matron closely supported by the ward sisters and a team of dedicated nursing and therapy staff.

In order to create a patient centred environment, our philosophy of delivering high standards of care and a structure of health promotion and education is achieved by:

  • Effective infection control
  • Pre-operative education classes for joint replacement patients / carers
  • Providing patient information relating to specific surgical procedures
