Radiation Protection Services

General Information

Radiation protection is part of and located within the medical physics department at Bradford Royal Infirmary. 

The service provides ionising and non-ionising radiation protection advice and support to the foundation trust, three neighbouring acute NHS Trusts, several primary care trusts, private hospitals, private dentists and a range of other institutions. 

Staff fulfil the roles of radiation protection adviser and laser protection adviser; provide medical physics expertise in diagnostic radiology and National Breast Screening mammography physics support.

The service provides scientific and safety support to users of ionising, ultraviolet, laser, electromagnetic radiation in radiology, nuclear medicine, dermatology (skin), ophthalmology (eyes), pathology and in many other specialties. This includes equipment acceptance testing, quality assurance surveys, patient-dose surveys, environmental surveys; checking of monitoring instruments, leak testing of sealed sources, design of radiation facilities, advice on audits of compliance with relevant legislation, assistance with radiation policies, risk assessments, work instructions and other related documentation; liaison with regulatory authorities, teaching and training of staff in radiation safety; scientific support for research and development.
