Medical Physics
General Information
Medical physics provides a range of scientific, technical and clinical services to the foundation trust, external NHS organisations and the private sector.
Medical treatment and diagnosis relies heavily upon the use of diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment. The radiation and clinical engineering services assist the foundation trust in ensuring safe and effective use of a wide-range of medical equipment, ranging from theatre instruments to imaging systems. Risk management and legislative compliance are important aspects of this work.
The clinical service is made up of a range of specialist therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Department staff assist in coordinating the foundation trust’s response to safety action bulletins issued by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) and provide advice on medical equipment selection and technical support.

Bone Densitometry |
Measurement of bone density using low dose ionising radiation - particularly useful in the detection and treatment of osteo-porosis (which can lead to broken bones in the elderly). |

Nuclear Medicine |
Involves administration of radioactive compounds matched for specific types of tissue and provides functional and anatomical information. |

PET/CT |
Similar to nuclear medicine in that it uses radioactive isotope but the images are fused with CT scan generated images. |

Clinical Physics |
Urodynamics (bladder pressure studies), anal-rectalmanometry and endo-anal ultrasound,oesophageal manometry and 24hour PH monitoring (manometry = pressure measurement. |

Clinical Engineering Services |
The service provides maintenance and equipment management services for electro-medical, mechanical and medical gas equipment |
