Directorate Information
The directorate provides a wide range of routine tests, such as x-rays, CT (computer tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and ultrasound, amongst others. We also provide a range of specialist investigations and procedures. We work from four sites:-
- Bradford Royal Infirmary
- St Luke's Hospital
- Shipley Hospital
- Highfields Medical Centre (ultrasound only)
We also provide a service to Nations Healthcare at Eccleshill Treatment Centre.
All examinations are carried out by qualified, state registered staff. After each examination one of our radiologists will provide an indepth report to the GP or consultant who asked for the examination.
We have modern, high specification equipment including three state of the art CT scanners and two MRI scanners. We have recently installed a multi-function C-arm fluoroscopy room (for realtime x-ray imaging) and will replace our interventional suite by the end of 07/08. We currently provide PET/CT to patients via a visiting mobile service. This is a new test for patients who have (or are suspected of having) cancer. We are one of the first centres in Yorkshire to provide this. Previously, patients travelled as far as London for these scans.
The directorate carries out in excess of 200,000 examinations every year and waiting lists for the majority of procedures are less than six weeks.
The directorate will soon finalise the installation of a multi-million pound Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), commonly called a digital x-ray system. No longer will x-rays be lost and should you be referred to another hospital we will be able to send them your digital x-rays.
The directorate has close links with training institutions in Leeds and Bradford which assists in recruitment of new starters and in the continuing professional development of existing staff members.
Accessing our Services
Clinical facilities are located at both the Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) and St Luke's Hospital. “Walk in” access to GP-referred patients is provided from St Luke's and Shipley radiology departments. The majority of in-patient tests are performed at BRI. Community based ultrasound imaging is offered at Highfield Medical Centre.
