Clinical Prosthetics
General Information
The Clinical Prosthetics Centre is based at St Luke’s Hospital, with rooms in both the Horton Wing and Extension Block. The centre provides a prosthetic rehabilitation service to patients referred from plastics, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), maxillofacial and ophthalmic (eyes) departments. The Clinical Prosthetics Centre also provides an emergency laboratory service to maxillofacial surgery for the treatment of facial traum. The department is made up of four laboratories located on level 0 of the Horton Wing, a treatment clinic/waiting room located on level two of the Extension Block with associated rooms, equipment and materials. It is currently staffed by three fully qualified and experienced MPT/Anaplastologist
Prosthetic services are available Monday to Friday from 9:00am-5:15pm to the following specialties:
Plastic Surgery
- Prosthetic reconstruction using adhesive or Osseointegrated (which means?) Implant retained ears, noses, eye/orbits.
- Prosthetic reconstruction of the nipple/areolus complex.
- Prosthetic reconstruction following finger/hand surgery.
- Prosthetic reconstruction of post-surgical leg defects.
- Gold eyelid-weight implants.
ENT Surgery
- Prosthetic reconstruction using adhesive or Osseointegrated Implant retained ears, noses, eye/orbits.
- Tracheo-stoma obturation.
Ophthalmic Surgery
- Custom made occular prostheses and cosmetic/hepatic shells
Maxillo-facial & Oral Surgery
- Pre and post surgical splinting and obturation.
- Post-surgical prosthetic rehabilitation.
- Oro/dental appliances and splints.
- Facial trauma support appliances and splints.
- Pre-surgical osteotomy planning support and splints.
Orthodontics
- Pre-surgical osteotomy planning support & splints.
How to access the service
Through written referral from either a patient’s GP or surgical/medical specialty consultant.
Teaching, Training and Research
The department is committed to a high standard of postgraduate teaching and continuing professional education in maxillofacial and clinical prosthetics. All staff are currently preparing for statutory registration with the Health Professionals Council (HPC) and are involved in individual research and development projects.
Quality Assurance - Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
All clinical staff actively take part in clinical audits locally. Clinical governance meetings are held bi-monthly in the department. Emphasis is given to clinical effectiveness and improving patient satisfaction.
