Services We Provide
The cancer services directorate comprises of:
|
The team is made up of four clinical nurse specialists, a part-time consultant, a specialist registrar, administrative and ethnic liaison officer support. The team receives around 400 new patient referrals each year (500 referrals in total) which mostly relate to inpatients with advanced cancer. Patients with any progressive, life-limiting illness may be referred. The team works closely with other services in the district – in particular the Marie Curie and Sue Ryder hospices, the community palliative care team, the Hospice at Home team and the heart failure nurse specialists. The team also delivers an extensive education programme throughout the foundation trust to undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, all grades of nursing staff and allied health professionals. |

The Annette Fox haematology (blood) unit is a 14-bedded ward and day care unit. The unit provides care for increasing numbers of patients with a wide range of malignant (cancerous) and non-malignant haematological conditions. Much of the treatment required is complex, using intensive chemotherapy regimes and specialist blood products. The unit has a particular interest in haematological cancer (leukaemia), haemophilia (when your blood cannot ‘clot’ properly) and bleeding disorders and provides specialist services for congenital (present from birth) bleeding disorders, haemoglobinopathies (inherited disorders) and obstetric (in pregnancy) haematology. The unit has worked closely for many years with its charity |

The oncology unit (specialising in chemotherapy) is a 21-bedded inpatient ward with a day care unit. The department treats cancers such as breast, lung, colorectal (bowel), upper gastrointestinal (digestive system), gynaecology (female reproductive organs) and urology (urinary tract). Bradford hosts the specialist upper gastrointestinal cancer team for the West of West Yorkshire, specialist urology and head and neck services. The quality and organisation of care consistently evaluated well at the Cancer Peer Review visit. The oncology unit lead a range of clinical drug trials and is developing its academic unit profile as part of Leeds and Bradford Universities. |

The cancer services department runs the fast track referrals office, which deals with all urgent GP referrals for suspected cancer. If you are given a fast track referral by your GP then we will see you within two weeks – this is a target set by the government and means that you are seen more quickly. The department provides administrative and clinical audit support for all of the multidisciplinary teams that manage cancer patients within the foundation trust. This means all patients have their cases looked at by a range of different professionals, including surgeons, radiologists, histologists, oncologists and specialist nurses. The department monitors and reports the national cancer waiting times targets to make sure that cancer patients receive timely diagnosis and treatment. |
