Pain Management
General Information
The specialty provides a well renowned service and comprises of five specialist consultants and four clinical nurse specialists providing chronic pain management.
The team provides a comprehensive service for all patients with long-term and difficult to manage pain. The service offers assessment and investigation of pain symptoms particularly from musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders including back pain. The team can also offer advice and guidance on drugs in the management of chronic pain.
Treatments range from simple injections through to state of the art techniques such as Spinal endoscopy, Spinal Cord Stimulation and cancer drug delivery by an injection into the spinal canal.
Patients can be referred for multidisciplinary assessment and where appropriate can then enter the Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Programme where the team offers a multidisciplinary approach to help patients lead normal lives in the face of continuing pain symptoms.
The speciality also offers a nurse led TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) clinic which commenced in October 2000 and all of the pain management consultants regularly refer into the service.
Staff also offer a supplementary service to the Palliative Care team with a range of interventional techniques undertaken to offer symptom relief for cancer patients.
