Digestive Diseases Centre
General Information
There is a large gastrointestinal unit in Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, known as the Bradford Digestive Disease Centre. This is the base for the investigation and management of patients for the district.
A comprehensive pancreatic-biliary (pancreas and bile duct) service is provided at the foundation trust and a referral service provided to Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and Airedale NHS Trust with a full range of gastroenterological and radiological diagnostics and treatments.
All patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers are managed by our specialist multidisciplinary team and up to 100 patients per year undergo major surgery for oesophageal (food tube) and gastric cancer. Our mortality (death) rate for patients who have had an operation in our unit is lower than the national average.and the five-year survival figures are the best in the northern region.
The foundation trust treats over 300 colorectal cancers per year and is a leading laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal centre. We have nurse-led follow-up clinics and have adopted the enhanced recovery programme, achieving reduced length of stay for patients undergoing major surgical procedures.
