GP Bulletin July 2017 - a focus on the new wing

Princess Anne opens new wing

HRH The Princess Royal has officially opened Bradford Royal Infirmary’s new £28m hospital wing. The state-of-the-art building, which took two years to build, houses two spacious children’s wards, a 16-bed intensive care unit (ICU), dementia-friendly wards for the elderly and a retail concourse.

HRH was accompanied on her tour of the new wing by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust chairman, Professor Bill McCarthy and chief executive, Professor Clive Kay. BRI is one of two acute hospitals and four community hospitals which form part of the Foundation Trust.

Improving the patient experience with our new Health Information Centre

Our new Health Information Centre is situated at the Bradford Royal Infirmary’s new hospital wing. This is a great addition which helps to empower our patients by giving them the latest literature on a variety of medical conditions. Research tells us that patients consistently report wanting more, and better, information about their health, health care, and treatment options. Our volunteers won’t be able to give medical advice – but can provide resources. They’ll also have the ability to print off information sheets on illnesses from the NHS Choices website.

Voluntary Services Nurse Manager, Chris Heaton, is heading up the new centre which will be manned by our volunteers. Chris said: “It’s great to see the new service up and running as it provides our patients with the latest information on a range of medical conditions, public health literature and signpost patients and visitors to the services that can give them the support they need. The centre holds a variety of leaflets from the likes of stop smoking and measles to cancer and heart conditions. It will also become a hub for awareness-raising events so that our teams can get key healthcare messages out to the public and our patients, as well as staff.”

The centre is open from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

New hospital wing wins design award

The new wing was recognised with the top honour at the Local Authority Building Control wards for West Yorkshire at Wakefield Unity Works. It took first place in the best public service building category, beating off stiff competition from other projects in the NHS and wider public sector.

Major High Street retail outlets open in the retail concourse of the new wing

We’re delighted to report that the new wing consists of a brand new retail concourse. Operated by Compass, these include Costa Coffee, Marks and Spencer Simply Food, Amigo newsagents and Lifestyles dining room. The Marks & Spencer outlet features an in-store bakery department, and also offers click and collect services. The mall area which runs between the retail outlets has plenty of seating areas and we will also have an outside deck area served from the Costa outlet and from the main mall, which will be open for use when weather permits.

This is a very exciting opportunity for us and the new outlets and reception area will greatly enhance the experience of our patients, visitors and staff; these are modern services for a modern hospital and complement our new hospital wing.
