If you are attending the unit because you suspect you are in labour, please telephone the Maternity Assessment Centre first on: 01274 364531/01274 364532. (10.00am-10.00pm).
Out of these hours contact Labour Ward. (24 Hour) The midwife will discuss this with you and give you advice and support that may help if you wish to stay at home longer.
Our newly refurbished, modern Labour Ward is situated within the Women's and Newborn Unit on the ground floor. We currently have 60 hours per week Obstetric Consultant cover (24 hour on-call) and 24 hour anaesthetic/epidural service providing both low and high risk dependency care. Our team of experienced staff members include: doctors, midwives, theatre practitioners, maternity support workers, health care assistants, clerical and domestic staff. They all work together as a team to deal with any event during established labour and birth, from normal low risk births to those that require more medical assistance.
We have two maternity theatres, a two bed recovery room, thirteen single delivery rooms including one pool room and facilities for birth support partners to make hot drinks.
Parking is available outside the unit and all evening admissions are directed to the rear entrance of the unit as the main doors will be locked at 10pm and re-open at 6.00am.
On arrival at Labour Ward the allocated midwife caring for you will meet you and discuss your plan of care. If you have made a birth plan we will be happy to discuss this and do our best to work with you. Unfortunately we have a no visiting policy, however, you are able to have two birth support partners at all times during labour.
