Bradford has seven specialties at the top of Yorkshire and Humber league for postgraduate medical training

February 03, 2012

Seven departments, including children’s services, radiology, anaesthesia, cardiology, oncology, neurology and respiratory at Bradford Teaching Hospitals have been given top marks for the excellent training they provide for future consultants.

Out of more than 20 training sites across Yorkshire and Humber, the seven departments received first place for ‘overall satisfaction’ in feedback supplied by the specialist registrars and junior doctors in training. The overall satisfaction score is calculated on responses to the quality of their education and teaching,  the quality of experience and senior supervision provided, how useful the post was to their future career and if they would recommend the post to another doctor in training.

It is the second year running that the doctors in anaesthesia and children’s services have received such an accolade in the awards which were announced recently by the General Medical Council national training survey.

The Foundation Trust’s Director of Postgraduate Medical & Dental Education, Simon Frazer, said: “We are delighted to receive this honour in recognition of the hard work, commitment and innovation of the medical and nursing teams within all these areas”.

“It is great news not just for all consultants in these specialties but for the whole medical education team and the efforts they put into the training of these young doctors.

“In Bradford, we strive to provide excellent training and close supervision of our doctors to deliver safe and high quality care. We have all worked hard to ensure Bradford attracts doctors of the highest calibre and that we remain the preferred center for training. We believe that this will ensure the long term future of an excellent service as we continue to recruit high quality consultants.

“The new technical skills laboratory and simulation centre which was opened at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) this year resolutely helps to put the Foundation Trust on the map as a centre of excellence for the teaching and training of all medical, nursing and allied health professionals.”

Each year over 330 junior and senior doctors have clinical training placements at Bradford Teaching Hospitals. They provide high quality care to all patients and their families. It is important that we continue to invest in the future of all our specialities and continue to strive for excellence.

Medical Director, Professor Clive Kay, added: “I am delighted for my colleagues who have won this award. Placements at Bradford Teaching Hospitals are very popular with doctors in training and this reflects the strong team spirit and commitment of the teachers.”
